A spongy material that binds the coconut fibre in the husk, coir pith is finding new applications. It is an excellent soil conditioner and is being extensively used as a soil-less medium for agri-horticultural purposes. Coir (/ˈkɔɪər/), or coconut fibre, is a natural fibre extracted from the outer husk of coconut and used in products such as floor mats, doormats, brushes and mattresses. Coir is the fibrous material found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut. You can use coir just like peat moss. It often comes pressed into bricks, which have to be soaked to break them apart.

The product is also found ground into dust, which is called coir dust, and is used to grow many exotic plants such as ferns, bromeliads, anthurium, and orchidsThe light, airy nature of coco promotes root growth. Overall, you get bigger and faster growing plants than you do in soil. But there’s a bit more room to make mistakes. Like in soil, roots are insulated to offset temperature changes. Excellent wettability, superior to peat. Ability to retain nutrients against leaching and to buffer supply. Unique water holding capacity. Good drainage / aeration. Electrical Conductivity is checked on the water extract of the material. One part of dry dust is mixed with five parts of demineralised water(ECw) by volume (100 ml to 500 ml). Stir, soak and strain the solution and measure the EC (ECc). The EC of cocopeat is measured by the formula ECc-ECw (mS/cm).
